How to Fold the American Flag

With our website only showing USA online casinos, obviously the majority of our visitors are USA residents. And with the July 4th holiday just being over, for those who were great enough to fly the American Flag over the holiday, we thought it would be a good time to show how to properly fold the American flag.

The proper folding and storage of the American flag is a honored tradition and there is a special way in which you are to fold the flag. We ourselves had to refresh our memory a few years ago, and while I was folding my flag just minutes ago I thought why not share the technique with anyone looking for the procedure.

If folding the flag by yourself, it is easiest to lay the flag on a table (remember the flag should never touch the ground). First lay the flag and smooth out any wrinkles so the flag is as flat as possible. Then fold the flag in half longwise, so the the stripes are over the field of stars. Then fold the flag in half again so that the stars are visible on both side of the flag.

Now again smooth out any wrinkles in the flag. The smoother the flag the better the fold will look when finished. Begin folding the flag in to a triangle, starting at the bottom of the flag where only the stripes are visible. Continue folding the flag into triangle folds which count to 11 folds until you reach the end of the flag (13 folds in total including the first 2 folds of folding the flag in half).

The final step of folding the American flag is to tuck the remaining field of blue into the open end of the flag. When finished you should only see blue on each side of the flag. Now you are finished and have properly folding the American flag foe storage.

Meanings Behind the American Flag

It is not a coincidence that you make 13 folds when properly folding the American Flag. The 13 folds represent the original 13 colonies when our country was founded. In fact each fold has a special meaning behind it. For example, the first fold is a symbol of life. See here for all 13 meanings behind each fold of the American Flag.

The flag also has 13 stripes which also represent the original 13 colonies. The blue star field contains 50 stars, with each star representing each state in our country. The American Flag has certainly changed over the years, as a star was added when a new state was incorporated into the country.
